Two towers for ViSIT

In order to develop applications with the greatest possible practical relevance and at the same time fully exploit the potential of ViSIT for exhibition guests, certain parts of the fortifications in Passau and Kufstein were expanded as ViSIT media towers. At the Veste Oberhaus, the historic observation tower was transformed into a ViSIT lookout tower. The Kaiser- and Fuchsturm of the fortress Kufstein serve as rooms for exemplary, multimedia permanent exhibitions, which were designed with and for ViSIT. At the same time, the Fuchssturm is decidedly turned into a media tower, while in the Kaiserturm its former function as a state prison is processed medially.

Characteristic of the information and interaction possibilities offered to visitors in both places is the establishment of substantive relations between the two pilot houses as well as to other castles in the Inn-Salzach-Danube area: with a multi-perspective narrative in different locations in two countries the content of the historic Inn-Salzach-Danube area is clarified. How is this space connected historically? What kind of stories are there to tell in terms of castles, palaces and residences, and how do these narratives touch or interlock? This red thread led the curatorial design of the project.

At the Veste Oberhaus in Passau, art historians and building researchers researched the history of the 900-year-old site and made references to other castles and residences. Economic-historical correlations are pointed out and the role of historic facilities as centers of economic areas and as points of reference on trade routes illuminated. The Kufstein Fortress shows its specific fortress history and relations with the Inn-Salzach-Danube region.
